Excerpt After overthrowing prince Cuza, the plotters set off to find a foreign prince as replacement him. Iancu Bălăceanu, the diplomat and close friend of Ion Ghica, also one of the plotters, assumed this mission. Napoleon III, madame Cornu and prince Bismarck involved themselves in the complicated negotiations which led to the election of prince Carol of Hohenzollern Sigmaringen. The prince travelled incognito to the Romanian border, accompanied by Bălăceanu's nephew Philippe Linche. Meanwhile, I . C. Brătianu, the future prime-minister had undertaken similar steps which thus established the idea that he was the moral author of the Prussian prince's coming. However, Bălăceanu still unpublished memoirs demonstrate the impossibility of his playing a part in this plot due to the fact that he was not accepted by Napoleon III, Europe's referee for this problem at the time.
