Excerpt | The 1878 diplomatic correspondence between the French minister of Foreign Affairs, William Henry Waddington, and the French envoys to Bucharest, Constantinople, Vienna, Berlin and London and that between Waddington and Jules Dufaure, the French prime- minister, provides information, from a French perspective, about the recognition of Romania’s independence by the Great European Powers. The present article focuses on the European perception of the way that the Romanian political factors approached one of the conditions for the recognition of the country’s independence, namely the political emancipation of the Jewish population. |
