Excerpt The forced abdication of the King Mihai the Ist , on December 30 1947, marked the beginning of the communist dictatorship in Romania. The change of the form of government (Romania became a Popular Republic), the foundation of the Unique Party, the Romanian Working Party, after the congress of union between the Romanian Communist Party and the Social Democratic Party from February 1948, the adoption of the new Constitution of Romanian Popular Republic on April 13th 1948 were followed by economical, social and cultural reforms, meant to socialize the Romanian society. Taking hold of the Romanian economy by the act of nationalization from June 11th 1948, the Romanian communists planned as the next step, the resizing of the cultural and spiritual life. Thus, the main aimed institution was the Romanian Academy, the highest instance of the Romanian culture. Its statute was modified and its members were filtered, keeping only those elements considered to have a 'healthy origin'. Next on the list was the School, the new law of education establishing rules according to the aim of the State Party, P.M.R, that of the creation of 'the new man'.
