Excerpt The letter sent by Henriëtte Maria de Beaufort captures a fragment of the
early twentieth century world since it is kept almost intact in the original envelope.
From the Parisian scene, where European personalities met and discussed events on
the continent, to the challenges of the war and the way the postal services adapted
to a world where the communication gates were closing and solutions always had
to be found, but also an opportunity to discuss the destinies of the characters to
whom this letter is related.
The letter, which bears the original stamps and notes, provides important
information about the course of correspondence during the First World War, as
well as the controls it went through. We can also discover the way the postal
control offices were organized and operated. The letter also gives us the
opportunity to discover the Epoca newspaper and the position it had regarding
Romania fighting alongside the Allies and the manner it was received by the
public. We can also see the role that special reporters had in reflecting national or
foreign policy issues abroad. This interesting source for the beginning of the
twentieth century gives us the opportunity to discover a personality in the history
of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, who does not only offer a vision to foreign
policy but as well wrote works that highlighted historical figures with a role in the
great picture of history. We can also discover the involvement of Henriëtte Maria
de Beaufort in charity and saving the lives of Jewish children. Originally intended
for children in the Netherlands, 'Hohes Licht' soon acquired an international
character and made it easier to receive Jewish children from 1933 and then help
them cross the Swiss border. Through one object we can discover an entire world
with political, cultural, social implications and stories that are connected over the
years and nations.
