Abstract | Iuliu Maniu (1873-1953) and Ion Mihalache (1882-1963) represented for the history of the Romanian nation not only the symbols of the struggle for political and national emancipation of the Romanians from the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Old Kingdom, but also some of the pillars of resistance against the regime of monarchical authority of King Charles II, against the Soviet and German expansionist policy on the Romanian territories, against the military dictatorship of General/ Marshal Ion Antonescu and against the communist dictatorship established with the support of the Soviet Union after 23 August 1944. The commemoration of the two personalities representative of national history is due to the 150th anniversary of the birth of Iuliu Maniu (January 8, 1873, Bădăcin, Sălaj county) and the 70th anniversary of his death (February 5, 1953) in the prison of political prisoners from Sighetul Marmaţiei, as well as the commemoration of the 60th anniversary of Ion Mihalache's death in Râmnicu Sărat prison on February 5, 1963. Supporters of the country's return to a democratic political system, Iuliu Maniu and Ion Mihalache, acted from the first days after August 23, 1944 so that the young King Mihai was supported to lead the country in accordance with the provisions of the 1923 Constitution. The two national political figures with a common historical destiny demonstrated their attachment to the country and the king and ended up in communist prisons defending their ideals. |
