Abstract | In the first part of this study, published in the previous issue of „Muzeul Naţional” -volume 34, we have seen how from the late ‘60s spree of industrial development and modernization through the massed acquisitioning of western technologies, to the manifest incapacity of the Romanian work force and political figures in the proper handling of the respective material and intellectual input, a pattern of stagnation and failure has been cemented in the Romanian machine building, chemical and metallurgical industries which toghether built the Romanian truck. The following pages dwell on the blatant rejection of the Romanian truck on the international market in the context of the 1980s industrial production crisis and subsequent worldwide changes in the structure of the demand for the truck industry. The inflexible mindset of the Romanian manufacturer, his incapacity to shift production from medium payload, general trucks to small capacity or highly specialized heavy trucks, a factor added to the preexisting problems of bad and uneven constructive quality and minimal investment in research and development has rendered the Romanian truck a limitedly viable option only for isolated and underdeveloped markets like Cuba or China. |
