In spring 1943 there was elaborated in Washington a project regarding an extraordinary raid against the oil fields from Ploieşti. The whole Ploieşti area was defended by 108 fighter planes (Romanian and German). The decision of unleashing a powerful aerial attack against the oil fields from Ploieşti was taken in Casablanca in January 1943 by US President Franklin Roosvelt and UK Prime Minister Wiston Churchill. The military operation was allotted to US 9th Fleet (US aerial troops). On Sunday the 1st August 1943 the „Tidal wave” aerial mission was started. |
