Excerpt At the beginning of the past century, tenor Constantin Grigoriu established the Romanian Lyrical Company, which got to be known as the “Grigoriu” Company, after its founder’s name. Even if the period when it functioned in seems short compared to the scale of history, its two decades of existence marked the history of Romania’s artistic life. On the one side, this is due to the fact that the company represented a competition to the National Theatre, thus offering the Bucharest public, and not only, an alternative. On the other side, Grigoriu discovered and promoted great names, such as Nicolae Leonard, Velimir Maximilian, Ciucurette, Carussy, Florica Florescu. Moreover, the “Grigoriu” Company contributed to the forming of a valuable generation of operetta singers, such as Florica Cristoforeanu, Elena Drăgulinescu-Stinghe, Virginia Miciora, who were some of Romania’s greatest lyrical singers.
